TEXES Science of Teaching Reading Practice Exam - Prep & Study Guide

Tiered vocabulary words refer to the categorization of words based on their complexity and the level of understanding required to use them effectively. This system is designed to help educators teach vocabulary in a way that builds on students' existing knowledge and gradually introduces more advanced terms.

For instance, tier one words are common, everyday words, while tier two words are more sophisticated and used in various academic contexts. Tier three words are specialized terms used in specific disciplines. By using tiered vocabulary, teachers can scaffold learning, ensuring that students master simpler words before moving on to more complex vocabulary that may be essential for academic success.

This approach supports differentiated instruction, allowing educators to tailor vocabulary instruction to meet the needs of all students, regardless of their proficiency level. It enables a deeper understanding of language and enhances reading comprehension, making it a vital strategy in literacy education.
